Documentary Series · Current TV · 2006–2008

From 2006 to 2008, Daniel Florêncio was commissioned to produce a series of short current affairs documentaries for the launch of the Emmy Award-winning television channel Current TV, created by former US Vice President Al Gore, in the United Kingdom.

Inspired by the works of Nick Broomfield, João Moreira Salles, Adam Curtis, Eduardo Coutinho and Michael Moore, Daniel began his work in documentaries with films that investigated power, media and social structures across different contexts. Taking part in the stories himself, both behind and in front of the camera, he brought a subjective and investigative tone to each piece.

His early works include Tracking William: A Night with a Paparazzo, a portrait of a London-based photographer on the trail of Prince William and his then-girlfriend Kate Middleton; Gagged in Brazil, an investigation into media corruption and the suppression of press freedom in service of local political interests; The Battle for Rio, which exposed the growing influence of militias in Rio's favelas; and Loverboys, a disturbing look at the recruitment tactics of young pimps in the Netherlands.

These formative years were instrumental in galvanising Daniel's narrative voice and helped define the thematic concerns and investigative tone that continue to shape his filmmaking today.
